Alexandru Tomescu StradivariusOn the occasion of the National Day of Romania, the world-renowned violinist Alexandru Tomescu was invited by The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York for a series of three concerts in New York and Washington, DC.

On November 26, at 6 pm, Romanian virtuoso Alexandru Tomescu will give a fine concert at The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, in Washington, DC, charming his audience with works by George Enescu and Niccolo Paganini.

On the National Day of Romania, December 1, at 8 pm, Alexandru Tomescu continues the series of concerts, with  Paganini – angel or demon? The Twenty-four Caprices, at the famous Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, in New York.

Paganini’s Caprices are among the most difficult works written for violin. They constitute 80 minutes of paroxysm and glory, and few violinists dare to play Paganini nowadays, and even fewer seem willing to risk recording him. Among the violinists who rise to the challenge of the Complete Caprices must be mentioned Ruggiero Ricci, Salvatore Accardo, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Michael Rabin, and, of course, Alexandru Tomescu.

After studying in Switzerland with Tibor Varga and in the US with Eduard Schmieder, he returned to his native country of Romania to work towards his mission of demonstrating that classical music can be appreciated by everyone. Alexandru has performed in venues such as Paris’s Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Art Space, and Carnegie Hall, appearing with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, and Christoph Eschenbach.
